Chimpanzee trekking is one of the most exciting wildlife activities in Uganda. It gives visitors a chance to walk through tropical forests and see chimpanzees in their natural home. During the trek, you can watch these intelligent primates as they play, feed, groom each other, and move through the trees. It is a memorable experience for anyone visiting Uganda.
Chimpanzee trekking is commonly done in Kibale National Park, Budongo Forest, and Kyambura Gorge. These forests are home to many chimpanzees and other wildlife such as monkeys, birds, and butterflies.
The experience begins with a short briefing from park rangers. They explain the rules and safety guidelines before entering the forest. Visitors then walk with a trained guide to look for the chimpanzees.
The trek can take 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are located that day. When the chimpanzees are found, visitors are allowed one hour to observe them in their natural environment.
To protect both visitors and chimpanzees, everyone must follow these important rules:
Keep a distance of at least 7–8 meters from the chimpanzees.
Do not feed or touch the animals.
Avoid loud noises and sudden movements.
Do not use flash photography.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke near the chimpanzees.
Visitors who are sick with flu or cough are not allowed to trek, because chimpanzees can catch human diseases.
Chimpanzee trekking is allowed for visitors 12 years and above in most chimpanzee destinations in Uganda. This rule helps ensure safety and responsible wildlife viewing.
For a comfortable trekking experience, visitors should carry:
Strong hiking boots
Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts
Rain jacket or poncho
Drinking water and snacks
Insect repellent
Camera or binoculars
These items help you stay comfortable while walking in the forest.
Chimpanzee trekking is possible all year round in Uganda. However, the best months are during the dry seasons:
June to September
December to February
During these months the forest trails are less muddy and easier to walk.
Chimpanzee trekking normally starts twice a day:
Morning: around 8:00 AM
Afternoon: around 2:00 PM
Morning treks are usually the best because chimpanzees are more active during that time.
